PEG-MGF (Pegylated Mechano Growth Factor) is a synthetic, modified variant of the naturally occurring insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) splice variant, MGF. It is primarily studied for its potential role in muscle and tissue repair and regeneration.
Function and Mechanism
When muscle tissue is subjected to mechanical stress, such as during intense exercise, the body naturally releases MGF to initiate repair and growth processes. MGF functions by activating muscle stem cells (satellite cells), promoting their division and fusion into mature muscle fibers.
The key distinction of PEG-MGF is the addition of a polyethylene glycol (PEG) molecule, a process called pegylation. This non-toxic additive significantly extends the peptide’s half-life in the body from minutes to hours or even days, allowing for systemic effects and less frequent administration in research settings.
